Module 6

Creating Powerpoint & Presentation Tips

Through my undergrad we have learned about so many different computer programs. I feel that this gave great insight and tips to help understand PowerPoints. I am able to make PowerPoint for the classroom on most of the standards that we are able to learn. I also have used different sites and other resources that are available to help us understand how to use PowerPoints. I do not make PowerPoints that much anymore because I use the flipcharts on my promethean, but this was very beneficial in helping re trigger my memory on how to create PowerPoints. However learning about the powerpoint slidemaster was really neat to me. I have seen it before, but this showed it in a different way that was beneficial to me.

After reading the duke article, I thought it was interesting to see the different ways to develop the PowerPoint. I like how it talked about the organization of the article. They also put an emphasis on using different pictures that will help keep the students engaged. I would love to have my students be able to create PowerPoints on certain standards that I teach in the classroom. I just wish we had the updated technology. If I took my kids to computer lab, none of only half of the computers will work. With that being said, I feel that we need more technology in the schools before we can use the technology to help benefit the kids.

Research

I have never heard of this EBSCOhost until I read about this tutorial. I think that being in grad school it informational to know ever research references that is around. I think that I will use this to help me with my research articles. The EBSCOhost seems to help us search for different articles. If  I read this correctly you can even put in certain articles that I need. If a new article is posted they will signal you and let you know. I thing that this site has a lot of different resources that can be available to anyone, but especially graduate students.

Powerpoint Game Resources and Kid Pix gave my great idea on how to use the two different programs and how they will be beneficial in the classroom. I think that my students would really love make books and other activities and creating different books throughout the programs. Like I noted early is that  would love to be able to do this in my classroom or in the computer lab, but we need to update technology before this can be done.

Module 5

I have always felt that centered leading strategies are crucial to help a child learn. In this video I like how they did the different reading card activities.  I also like how they were divided into different groups. I feel that centers are important when working with the students because it helps them see different perspective and they are able to collaborate with their class members to understand the words they were reading on the card. I like how they were given independent work after working together with a partner. This really helps see where the child individually stands

I really like watching this video. As teacher I constant struggle on how I should let me kids sit. I want them to sit in area that they can benefit from learning. In my classroom I have the kids set up where they can learn by themselves or they can work in a group to do the assignment. I think that letting the kids have a say so in the way that they learn is crucial for them to understand. Having the students lined in a row is not a beneficial way to teacher to me. Yes, I do it when we have school wide assessments etc. I think that a child should be able to be a in a group with friends and understand the difference between working. I also feel that this has a big part to do with teachers who have control over their classroom.

Literacy centers in the classroom are great to help to increase comprehension and fluency for the students. I am a strong believe in literacy centers and how they help child develop.  I think that literacy center for a balanced approach in writing is a great when they are working together with a friend. I think that literacy centers benefit kids greatly when they’re done correctly.

Spaces and Places seemed like a real interesting boo to me. I think that as a teacher it is constant struggle to get the kids seated in a small group seating. This small group setting has to be beneficial for the child and help them learn. This book gives you the best ideas and seating plans to help keep your class engaged and eager to learn. I always feel that I am constantly changing my room around. I have a small space so it is difficult to have the kids in different groups.

Module 4

RTI

RTI is something we learned about last year and I was able to complete this intervention with one of my students. I feel that it has always been extremely helpful inside the classroom. The RTI process is s tier process that we use to walk the students through by making accommodations. It prevents us from just automatically placing a child into special education.  I feel that Brozo did a great job on breaking down the RTI process and helping me get a better understanding. Although I feel that our county is constantly changing the tier process and the paperwork constantly I liked the way they he explained this in terms that I could understand.

Powerpoints

I have always enjoyed learning and doing web quest. I feel that the lack of technology has really prevented us from being able to do technology lessons like this. I wish we could do activities like webquest or glogsters. I thought it was interests to look at the PowerPoint and explained about that helps keep the students intrigued and understanding what is expected of them. I think that integrating technology is important. I also think this is great for visual learning as well.

Video

Watching a video always helps me understand what I am learning better than any other form. I enjoyed watching this video on the first grader’s.  I thought it was neat to see how they were trying to put together a sentence. I feel that when my third graders come up to third grade they are still lacking the skills of writing larger sentences. They still want to write sentences that are small and only state one point, like I love to go to the mall.  I think this helped show us what other teachers do in different grades to help kids understand how to write.

Literacy Across the Curriculum

Every year we focus more and more on literacy across the Curriculum. We always try to incorporate literacy in every subject. The only two subjects that I feel that this is challenge is math and science. IF eel those are two subjects that are really strong hands on topics and need to be focused as hands on. We doing writing across the curriculum in third grade and make sure that we write about everything we learn about.

Module 3

Integrating science and Literacy

This really struck close t o me because every day I experience teacher who will give a student a book and have them read the text and then recall what they read. This is not teaching a child to me. I feel that this is not helping a child understand the science stand they are to learn by reading it. In science the kids always think of hands on and truly experiments different areas of the earth and why it is important that we understand. The content and vocabulary that is used in the books are way too hard for my student to understand.  With informational readings being a big push with common core standards the students are reading more and more readings that provide factual information. Integrating science and literacy is the key to getting children to understand informational writings, but I don’t feel we should take away from the students hand on experience.

Exploring Science and Social Studies

In third grade socials studies is very important to integrate. WE learn a lot of the different American Heroes and how they changed and help America become who we are today. We read a book about each character and integrate different literacy terms that we have talked about all year. We discuss main idea and other terms. We even compare and contrast with the American Heroes. I feel that in third grade integrating Socials studies is a lot easier to integrate with reading than science.

Encouraging Enthusiasm in Reading

In order for a child to love what they do they need to be praised and know that what they are doing is fun and so interesting. I meet teachers every day that don’t find reading interesting. They put it on the back burner and don’t get into it with the kids. Then they turn around and fuss because they don’t understand why their kids won’t sit in their desk and read when asked. I feel that as a parent, mentor, teacher or sister you set an example for the kids. They must need to get excited about reading.  I think that the teachers and parents can definitely help with that.

Expository Text Structure

I teach the different text structures every year and have the students read the different readings and articles and tell me what text features told them it was an informational reading. I thought it was very neat that you can use the guide words an d cues to help the children comprehend what they are reading.

Overall, I feel this module had a lot of important information. I feel that this helps me relate more to what I teach as a third grade teacher. I think that the smart table was really neat. I feel that I am always looking for new ways to incorporate technology. Understanding expository text is key to ha child succeed in reading and all other subject’s throughout the school.

Module 2

Powerpoint- Strategic Reading Lessons.

I felt the powerpoint was very informative. It helped me understand the different ways that teachers can help improve a child fluency and comprehension. The power point provided a flex grouping which grouped the students based on a strategy that they needed to work on. The different strategies helped improved a certain target to fit every students needs. To help with the reading comprehension, it focused more on literature circles and guided reading. I have always loved literature circles. My students love doing them too. They loved talk about the book and relating to the book. I think this provided great lesson ideas and it will really help me with doing the lessons for my tutoring student

Literacy Content reading and scaffolding

I found this powerpoint very useful. It was full of ideas and resources that will help any teacher be successful in the classroom. I like how it has websites and resources for us to use. The running records we use in our class every day. Overall I think this was a great PowerPoint and helps me focus more on the specific steps of reading.

Video 1- I really liked watching this video. If eel that watching a video always helps provide a better visual in the classroom. I constantly work hard at differentiating in instruction. I feel that his is a challenge for me and other students. I think this video helped give me a clear understanding how to differentiate instruction that will help improve and meet the child needs. This will also help when working in the classroom because I differentiate all instruction for all my kids which is called flex grouping. I always do this before the CRCT to help them review and better understand what they personally don’t understand when given practice test.

Video 2- I think this video focused more on the history of differentiated instruction. It gave us a better understand of what differentiate means. It also helped us understand why it is important in the classroom. The teacher in the video has a class that was on different levels. She had to find the way to meet fall of the students in the classroom. This can be tricky for any teacher at times. At the school I teach at we are always doing flexible grouping. I think that it is great if it is done correctly.
